IDENTITY CRIME PREVENTION INSTITUTE

Identity Related Medical Fraud

Medical identity theft involves the unauthorized use of someone’s health care insurance information by another individual. In most cases, personal identity and insurance information is stolen to obtain medical services, medical devices, or prescription drugs.

If you are a university or college administrator, involved with K-12 education, or have teenagers of your own, these programs are for you. Contact the NTICAI to learn more.

The identity information may also be used to submit fraudulent insurance claims or bogus Medicare or Medicaid claims. In some cases, employees of health care facilities may falsify patient records by adding treatments without the patients’ knowledge to submit inflated claims and take the excess payments.

When thieves take personally identifying medical information, the original patient’s health care record may be combined with that of the thief, creating the potential for misdiagnoses and life-threatening scenarios for victims in addition to financial damage.
