Government Document Fraud
Government document fraud refers to the manufacture, sale, or use of false identity documents, including bogus driver’s licenses, false birth certificates, Social Security cards, or passports. This type of fraud may also involve the attempt to obtain legitimate identity documents via fraudulent methods.
There is a large market for fraudulent government documents. Buyers include illegal immigrants and criminals who want to avoid prosecution. Identity thieves often steal personal information to create and sell false identification documents, with which they can then obtain additional government documents. With fake documents, criminals can obtain benefits from government programs, move across state lines, or commit other crimes using the false identity.
